Today our nation, and the world is faced with a unique racial challenge. How do we admit our ignorance about people of color when we have a black person as our president? The reality is that, even though we elected a black man as the head of the greatest nation in the world, many people are still without a clue about black people and people of color in general. It can be a real embarrassment to be at a social occasion or in casual conversation and show your lack of knowledge about the people who are now in charge of this country.
"I hear a lot of people saying that Obama isn't really black, because he's half white, what do you think?"
That's a difficult question to answer without consulting a black person first.
Simply act as if you are getting a text from your iPhone and excuse yourself. In a few touches of the screen you can contact an on-call person of color, receive a pre-written answer to your question, or watch a video that will point you on the right track. You can then return to that conversation confident that your response will move our country forward, not back into the pre-post-racism era.
This can also help, of course in conversations between white people and people of color.
